Vedic astrology expert Acharya Devraj ji considers the calculation of horoscope houses to be very important in the study of astrology. In astrology, the concept of the 12 houses is central to creating and interpreting an individual's birth chart, also known as a natal chart or horoscope. Each house represents a different area of life and is associated with various experiences, events, and aspects of personal development. The houses are determined by the time and location of an individual's birth and are laid out in a 360-degree circle, with each house covering 30 degrees of that circle.
1. First House (House of Self): The first house is also known as the Ascendant or Rising Sign and is associated with self-image, personality, appearance, and the initiation of new endeavors. It represents the "mask" one wears when meeting others and how one projects themselves into the world.
2. Second House (House of Value): This house relates to mother tongue, speech, family, initial education, possessions, finances, material assets, self-worth, and values. It governs how one manages resources, as well as their attitudes toward wealth and material objects.
3. Third House (House of Communication): The third house covers all forms of dialogue, communication, and verbal communication, written communication, including thinking, writing, meeting and your talent. It also represents siblings, neighbors, short trips, away from home and early education.
4. Fourth House (House of Home and Family): Also known as the Imum Coeli or IC, this house governs the home environment, immediate family, native place, mother land, home town, ancestry, roots, and one's sense of security. It also relates to the end of matters, including the final stages of life.
5. Fifth House (House of Pleasure): This house is about creative expression, children, romance, and leisure activities. It reflects what brings joy, including artistic pursuits, entertainment, and hobbies.
6. Sixth House (House of Health): The sixth house relates to daily routines, work and service, health and wellness, and practical skills. It is associated with employment, pets, and habits, including how one manages their well-being.
7. Seventh House (House of Partnership): Also known as the Descendant, this house covers all one-to-one relationships, including marriage, business partnerships, and open enemies. It reflects the qualities one seeks in others and how they interact in close associations.
8. Eighth House (House of Transformation): The eighth house is associated with deep emotional bonds, shared resources, and transformations. It governs inheritance, sexuality, and matters of life and death, including the metaphysical and psychological realms.
9. Ninth House (House of Philosophy): This house covers higher education, philosophy, religion, law, ethics, and long-distance travel. It reflects one's search for meaning, exploration of beliefs, and experiences that broaden the mind.
10. Tenth House (House of Social Status): Also known as the Midheaven or MC, this house is about career, reputation, achievements, and public life. It represents one's aspirations, ambitions, and how the world perceives them.
11. Eleventh House (House of Friendship): The eleventh house governs friendships, groups, communities, and hopes for the future. It relates to one's social circle, humanitarian interests, and the rewards of being part of a collective.
12. Twelfth House (House of the Unconscious): This house represents the subconscious mind, hidden matters, secrets, and karmic debts. It covers isolation, institutions such as hospitals and prisons, and self-undoing, as well as spiritual growth and transcendence.
The positioning of planets within these houses during the time of birth significantly influences how these areas of life are experienced by an individual. As the planets transit and move through the different houses, they activate and highlight various aspects of life, reflecting growth, challenges, and changes. Understanding the 12 houses provides a comprehensive framework for interpreting the myriad facets of a person's life through the lens of astrology.
