Another tale from the Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana tells how Lord Vishnu defeated King Bali and conquered the three worlds, after which King Bali requested Lord Vishnu to stay in his palace. Goddess Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Vishnu, does not agree to this arrangement and makes King Bali her brother by tying a Rakhi to him. Moved by this gesture, King Bali fulfills her wish and Lakshmi requests Lord Vishnu to come back home.

In another story, Goddess Manasa, Ganesha's sister, comes to visit him on Raksha Bandhan and ties a Rakhi on his wrist. This inspires Ganesha's sons Shubh and Labh, who want to participate in the Raksha Bandhan celebration, but feel lonely without a sister.
